"So Nat'ralists observe, a Flea hath smaller Fleas that on him prey, and these have smaller fleas to bit 'em, and so proceed ad infinitum." a fractal, to offer something in the way of a definition to those who've been craving one, is a mathematical representation of an infinite pattern, useful in describing partly random or chaotic phenomena. it is a curve or geometric figure, each part of which has the same statistical character as the whole. similar patterns recur at progressively smaller (and larger) scales (recursive self similarity is the sexy term for this). that's the dictionary definition. but look around: we live on a "fractal" and we are "fractals" ourselves. it's all very beautiful.

if you've been hanging out with me lately, you'll know that i've recently fallen in love with fractals and chaos theory. i talk incessantly about it, which is either really hot or really annoying, depending on who you ask. amazingly, i've been asked to do some blogging about it as well. and so, i've resolved--only every once in a while, in addition to my photography--to post something about fractals. admittedly, i'm shy to talk about it because i don't consider myself an expert. but, armed with the hope that my studies might inspire yours, even or especially considering my neophyte status, i will see what i can do.
